The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the School of Computing and Information Systems offer an opportunity to complete one semester of full-time study abroad in Switzerland. This program fulfills the general education World Perspectives requirement (3 cr) and may fulfill up to 6 credits of the general education Issues requirement upon submission of the required reflection paper and form.

You can also take part in a Summer Faculty-Led Exchange, a two-way exchange of a cohort group of students from both GVSU and ZHAW. A group of 10-12 students from GVSU travel for an intense two-week course in data science, analytics, and visualization. In that course GVSU students are joined by 10-12 students from ZHAW. Both groups of students then return to Allendale for two additional weeks.  In addition to lectures and lab time, there will be field trips to the unique features of the host country. For example, while hiking in the Swiss Alps, students visit one of the world’s most secure data centers, a former Swiss military command center 1,000 feet deep in the Alps. This program fulfills the general education World Perspectives requirement (3 cr), and may fulfill up to 3 credits of the general education Issues requirement upon submission of the required reflection paper and form.

ZHAW is located in Winterthur, near Zurich, in close proximity to the tri-national boarders of Germany and France. You are certain to have a multi-cultural experience! Additionally, Zurich is one of the world’s financial centers and is considered the banking and chocolate capital of the world. CIS students are encouraged to consider studying at ZHAW during the Fall semester since there are more courses taught in English. Austria

University of Applied Sciences, FH Joanneum, Graz

In partnership with FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences, the School of Computing and Information Systems offers an opportunity for CIS students to complete one semester of full-time study abroad in Austria. This program fulfills the general education World Perspectives requirement (3 credits), and may fulfill up to 6 credits of the general education Issues requirement upon submission of the required reflection paper.

With a main campus located in Graz, home to a thriving student population and one of the most well-preserved city centers in Central Europe, FHJ offers computing students the opportunity to study at an Austrian university. The program embraces project/team based experiential learning. Many of the faculty have extensive experience in their relevant industry. Kingston University, Kingston UK

Kingston University is located just 20 minutes from the center of London, one of the world’s most diverse, vibrant, and cosmopolitan cities. You will find this suburban community to be a mixture of old and new, with a daily fruit and vegetable market, as well as major chain stores and supermarkets. Kingston upon Thames is home to, many Thames-side pubs, a number of international restaurants, royal parks, and amateur music and theatre groups. offers an opportunity for CIS students to complete one semester or one year of full-time study abroad in England.
