Mr. Bruce Klein
Professor Emeritus
Bruce J. Klein, Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Information Systems, came
to Grand Valley State University in 1973. After finishing a master's degree in
mathematics at Trinity College, he did doctoral work in computer science at Purdue
University. His first academic appointment was at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and
State University where, in 1968, he was the first regular faculty member in the newly
formed Computer Science Department. He served as its department head in 1972-73.
His initial Grand Valley appointment was in William James College. In 1977, he moved
to the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. He served as the chair of the
Computer Science and Information Systems Department from its inception in 1993 until
his retirement in 2001.
Professor Klein's academic pursuits have focused on the teaching of computer science,
curriculum development and professional service. In the areas of student and
institutional collaboration, he has published and/or served on panels with colleagues from
the U.K., Sweden, Finland, Australia and New Zealand. He has been very active in the
ACM's Special Interest Group for Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). SIGCSE is
an international organization with approximately 2,300 members that focuses on
university-level issues in computing education. He served as SIGCSE chair from 1997 to
2001 and remains on its Board. He served on the ACM Education Board and the Executive
Committees of the ACM SIG Governing Board and USACM.
