CS150 Opt Out

The option to not take the class is to test out of it. There are 2 components to the testing out process:
  1. The first is to go over to GVSU Testing Services, 200 STU and take the CLEP exam "Information Systems and Computer Applications"

Testing dates vary by semester, so please check the GVSU Testing Services web site to see when the dates are. Further, sign up early, as slots to take the exam do fill up! There are fees involved in taking the exam. They can also be reviewed at the web site. That information can be found at:www.gvsu.edu/testserv

  2. When you pass the written exam (and you must pass the first part), you come back to the School of Computing and Information Systems (C-2-100 Mak Hall) and set up an appointment to take the "on-line" portion of the exam with the CS150 coordinator.

    The lab portion covers:

    • MS Word 2003
    • MS Excel 2003
    • MS Access 2003
    • Integration of the three applications

Students who have completed CS150 would easily pass the lab portion. Those taking the exam have found it to be a bit more challenging. If/when you pass this with at least 70% correct, you will be given credit for CS150. If you do not pass the lab portion, the student will still be granted 3 credit hours of General Business credit (if the written portion is passed.)

Note: There are many rules about receiving CLEP credit, such as
"In keeping with the senior residency requirement, examination credit will not be granted within the last 30 hours toward the degree."
